Victorian Government funds Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic
After a successful 2012 season, the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic is all set to kick-off on January 1st, 2013.
The race will begin in Geelong, Victoria, Australia and the three-day event will be held along with a new-look Jayco Herald Sun Tour.
The event will be held under the watchful eye of John Trevorrow who will be performing the Race Director duties for both the races.
Trevorrow is a three-time winner of the race and is an ideal candidate for the job, as he noted that the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic is an ideal way to start the new season.
"These two iconic events have always offered the main opportunity for Australian teams and riders to take on international athletes and have been the starting point for many illustrious careers," he said.
"Running from 1st through 6th of January, the ‘Mitchelton’ summer of cycling will take centre stage in the cycling world”.
“All the best riders and teams in Australia will be joined by international teams in what is a great celebration of the beginning of a new year of cycling".
The race will welcome the New Year Day at Eastern Beach before moving to Portarlington on January 2nd.
The event will conclude on the 3rd of January in Williamstown and the Jayco Herald Sun Tour will begin on the same afternoon.
The Victorian Government Significant Sporting Events has just granted the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic a sum of $15,000 which will definitely help the organisers in performing their duties efficiently.
Hugh Delahunty is the Sports and the Recreation Minister and he believes that the race is given the economic support to promote the sport in the region and also to boost the local sports participation.
He noted that it was necessary to, "keep Victoria in the national and international spotlight".
Allan Davis wins the 2012 version of the race and is a pre-race favourite for the coming edition of the event.
Melissa Hoskins wins the Elite Women category of the race after she overcame her teammate Amanda Spratt after a close encounter.
It will be interesting to see, how the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic 2012 unfolds as all the local Australian cyclists are warming up to welcome the New Year in Geelong, Victoria.
