Victorian International 2012: Jennifer Tam advances into Women’s Singles quarter-finals
The talented female shuttler Jennifer Tam got permission to proceed in Li Ning Victorian International after defeating Alice Wu in second round match on June 29, 2012.
Both players, who team up in the Women’s Doubles event, played like arch-rivals and gave each other a tough time in this pre quarter-final tussle. They remained head-to-head for 55 minutes to read final figures of 16-21, 21-13 and 21-14.
Though, Jennifer received a severe blow straight away in the opening set but she rose on her toes in crucial moments and stunned her challenger.
Meanwhile, the opposing shuttler could not capitalise an early advantage and crashed out of the home event.
The first set of the match had many twists and turns as at one stage the higher ranked Jennifer was in strong position to wrap the show but Alice stole the limelight with a lustrous performance.
In the beginning, Jennifer got into commanding position with couple of uninterrupted rallies and maintained the upper hand until mid-game break.
She clinched four points in a row to reach at 7-3 and then doubled the impact by registering decent total of 11-6 at half time.
However, Alice showed transformed character and turned the tables in later part of the game. She played flawless badminton and bagged 15 out of last 20 points to place a winning margin of 21-16.
Next game brought match to right balance as the suppressed shuttler of previous set bounced back with a strong reply.
This time Jennifer displayed good finishing skills and did not squander her efforts in crucial moments.
She set the foundation of her dominance by gathering six points without any interruption. She swiftly raised her total from six to eleven before the interval.
After one-minute break, she kept on dictating her competitor all the way to game point situation and served notice of her supremacy with 21-13 score on the board.
This revised status made third set consequential and both compatriot shuttlers strived hard to avoid a woeful exit.
However, Jennifer managed to raise hands as the survivor by putting up a concluding figure of 21-14. She will now lock horns with another Australian campaigner Louisa Ma in the quarter-final round.
