Victorian Vikings beat New South Wales Waratahs, 5-2: Hockey Recap
In an outstanding move, Victorian Vikings defeated New South Wales (NSW) Waratahs by three goals, 5-2 in the opening round of the Men’s Australian Hockey League (AHL) that took place in Canberra, Australia.
It was a fine day when both teams landed on the field with great energy. Both the teams started offensively and stormed either side in the opening period. However, it was NSW that drew the first blood in the very early minutes of the first half and established
their dominance. NSW earned a short-corner in the very second minute of the game and tested Kieran Govers. He was brilliant enough to unleash a powerful shot that sailed straight into the net.
However, the attackers from Victorian Vikings were not sitting idle. In a matter of two minutes, James Webster managed to take the ball at the top of the circle and struck a powerful shot past opponent's goalie and had it all even at one-all.
The two teams, who had their horns locked at one-all, the pace of the game geared up and both sides started more offensive game in search of go-ahead goal. In the 10th minute of the game, Alister Mclennan scored another goal from the field to
put Victorian Vikings ahead onto the score-board, 2-1.
Once the strikers from Victorian Vikings established their dominance, the goals started to come out without any hurdles. Glenn Simpson intercepted a pass successfully and tapped it into the NSW goal, expanding the lead up to two goals, 3-1. The first half
of play was completed with Victorian Vikings sitting at the top by a couple of goals.
The speed of the game reduced in the second half of play. Matthew Butturini of NSW converted a short-corner in the 43rd minute of the game to make a comeback into the game. However, the strikers from Victorian Vikings were not ready to do so.
Chris Ciriello notched a couple of goals in the in the 45th and 53rd minutes respectively and sealed the Victorian Vikings win at 5-2.
Another game played between Canberra Lakers and Tassie Tigers at the same ground concluded with a draw at three-all.
Both the squads opened the match professionally and moved side-by-side in the scoring. Geoff c**k of Tassie Tigers scored first goal of the game in the 9th minute of the game. However, Glen Turner replied it with a field goal in the 12th
minute to make the game more interesting. In the later time, Will Lawler and Richard Howson exchanged one goal each in the 34th and 45th minutes. Dougal Middleton scored a goal for the Tassie side, while Glen Turner did it for Canberra
Lakers to conclude the game at 3-3 draw.
