Victory against Mean Green has good impact on Raiders morale for 2011 Season
The Red Raiders, women’s volleyball team of Texas Tech University, has turned in a remarkable performance during the 2011 volleyball season. Since the beginning of regular season last month, Texas Tech has built up an overall record of 19-1. The Red Raiders
received just one defeat at the season opener TCU Tournament but made clean sweeps at the Texas Tech Invitational, Louisiana Tech Tournament, and UT-Arlington Tournament. Furthermore, the team is carrying the same momentum and still going strong against their
volleyball rivals.
In their last match against North Texas volleyball team on Monday, September 19, the Raiders demonstrated a stellar performance and extended their winning streak to 15 matches. This is the longest winning streak (15-0) in the history school’s volleyball
program since 1996. Texas Tech accumulated an all-time lead over Mean Green and improved to 6-1 record in Denton City.
The fixture between Texas Tech and North Texas (Mean Green) teams marked the second time that Raiders dropped the opening set and sealed match victory in four sets. The Raiders faced the similar scenario in 2008, when they held off Jackson State Volleyball
squad for 3-1 victory at the Mean Green Classic. Ironically enough, both times the City of Denton set up the field of play for Raiders.
In the running season, the Texas Tech had not dropped the opening set in any match since TCU Invitational.
The match created perfect opportunity for senior outside hitter (OH) Amanda Dowdy to capture huge spotlight. She registered 18 points for Tech on 35 attack attempts. She was associated with .400 hitting percentage and committed only two errors in the match.
Dowdy set a new record with the highest hitting percentage since 2009, when Raiders faced off Nebraska.
She was not only good in attack but also did a great job at digging. She went into double-double for the 11th time in the season. She built a same record in the last season. Overall, it marked her 24th career-double-double. Equally
talented sophomore Aubree Piper also went into double-double and added 10 kills.
The Mean Green team was down with 14 service errors in the match, which marked the most for Raiders opponent in the 2011 Season. Likewise, the Tech received seven aces from Mean Green, which was also high for aTech opponent.
The Texas Tech recorded an overall hitting percentage of .314 and the team crossed the .300 mark for the fifth time. Before taking on North Texas, the Raiders finished against UT-Arlington with .300 hitting. Nevertheless, the early miscues of Raiders in
last match broke the six-match streak where Tech hit .300 or better during the first set.
