Question:

Vidalia Onion as substitute for Green Onion?

I am cooking a Thai recipe tonight- chicken & broccoli in a peanut sauce. However, the sauce calls for green onion & the grocery store was out (I know, crazy!). Instead of stopping at a different store tonight, I was hoping I could just use a bit of vidalia onion. I realize the taste won't be exactly the same- but would this work? I also have dried onion flakes as well in my pantry & onion powder. Any suggestions welcome!

  1. Of course, you CAN substitute Vidalias for regular onion, but dried chives would be better if your store has them. Never be afraid to experiment, most great cooks do it all the time.

  2. Green onions are really mild and Vidalia is sweet.

  3. Thai cooking is generally colourful, check through the recipe and see if you think the green of the onions is more of a garnish, like I think it will be.

I am not certain what a Vedalia Onion is so I would suggest you use the onion flakes.

  4. Green onions or spring onions or scallions have a slight "onion" taste.  The closest would be chives or leeks, vidalias are sweet in taste which would complement and work well in Thai food.  Green onions are usually used as a garnish in Thai food, not as a main ingredient.  Thai food is a unique balance of spicy, sweet, sour.... so go ahead and use the vidalias.  Cooking is all about experimenting and sometimes using what's on hand.  I am sure it will taste delicious.

  5. the green onions are used because you can chop them up in small amounts and they are not too potent.  Vidalia onions are stronger in taste so if you use it, try to limit how much you use and chop it up very small.

  6. I think it will really change the flavor.  It will taste more Southern than Thai.  You could just leave out the onions altogether.  That is probably what I would do.
