  1. There is an Unbiased reviews and side-by-side comparisons of video Converters and gives you enough information to research the ins and outs of a particular product:

Also, you can google some other software:

  2. Skype is a good one and http://www.dimdim.com/

  3. The FLV format is is medium quality/high compressed video file that is used by YouTube and other video streaming websites. Google and FLV converter.

  4. You want a codec that compresses video even tighter than normal with minimal loss of video quality?  Well, currently, that is AVCHD

AVCHD uses MP4 to create these tight compressions and stores them in H.264.  MP4 can compress SD and HD video tighter than most codecs with minimal loss of quality.  H.264 is the default video codec behind Quicktime's movie format container MOV (which was the format used to contain video on VHS and VHS-C tapes).

If you have a registered version of Quicktime Pro, you can save your HD videos in MP4, H.264, or as mp4 in an mov file container (which is AVCHD).  Quicktime Pro is not free, but it only costs $30 and handles all of the common video codecs used by video sharing websites and video editing programs.

Quicktime also works with SD video.  You can also use Quicktime Pro to convert your videos from one format to another in various compression ratios for quality control.  Quicktime also includes controls to adjust or remove the letterbox black bars
