Video Editing Programs that combined two clips together?

Question

Hello, I was just wondering if there is a video editing program that acts like Photoshop.

I found that Windows Movie Maker really doesn't have any good feautures (for customizing) and leaves too much black space.

Free program is most appreciated, but any good program will do.

I run Windows Vista, but I already know how to do the Windows XP compatibility mode.

Sony Vegas and Adobe After Effects are good ones but there not free.

I heard about trakAxPC, its free, but not sure how it works.
