Question:

Video Security Camera in my barn???

I'm looking for a camera for my barn. I have been told repeatedly to avoid the 2.4ghz because it interferes with the internet connection and that I should get a 5.8ghz camera. So how do these people that have 2.4ghz keep them functioning even with all the household interference??? Whats the best way to go? 2.4ghz is cheaper by far with more options

  1. 900MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz are all in shared spectrum.

900 is not so good because it has been shared for SO long, there's all sorts of interference. Garage door openers and lots of the early wireless home phones used that spectrum... so the FCC let 2.4GHz out - and put phones and Wifi and a bunch of stuff on it... so... they let 5.8 GHz loose. Wait long enough and it will get crowded too.

MOST of the terminals in these ISM frequency ranges are low power (ALL are supposed to be, but people change stuff).

So... if your farm is in a rural area, then you *should* not be impacted by your neighbor's terminal's spurious RF (radio frequency) bursts. They will be too far away. If you already have something in use in one frequency range, it would make sense for you to use another frequency range for your other wireless stuff.

If you use 2.4 GHz wifi is there some reason why you don't just get a wifi camera? Is there a particular reason you want to connect the camera to your TV rather than your computer? That way, instead of "interfering" it will be part of the wifi network.

That said, I have 4 wired cameras around the outside of my house

and they feed into a DVR

and uses a spare pair of wires (in CAT5 cabling) that runs through the house to get to all the secondary video-inputs of the TVs in the different rooms - so I can flip to the security channel when I don't feel like watching The Comedy Channel... and it has an IP address so I can get to is from my computers, too...

so I understand why you might want to connect to your TV... but I was just checking.

  2. I have no clue...But when you find out, what works for you, let me know. I might just suggest it to my trainer for her barn.

Oh yeah, here are some pics of the kids at the farm I work at. The pony "Miss Fancy Pants" is the one that I have had the pleasure of working with and is the one that I mentioned in the other nights post :) Enjoy.
