I'm currently in a long term substituting position in a middle school class for students with learning disabilities. In science I'm currently teaching them aboht the solar system which is good as planetary science was one of my electives at university.

The lessons usually consist of some group reading and working through some questions related to that reading, followed by some related visual like a video for the last bit of the period.

I tried to show bits of BBC's "The Planets" documentary series as I remembered it being sensational, unfortunately it's pretty clearly over their heads. There's many lengthy sections about the history of certain discoveries and the events leading up to them and long monologues from scientists. These sections completely lose their attention.

What I need is something that suits the needs of these students, perhaps more of an elementary school level with lots of imagery rather than scientific mumbo jumbo and history.

Does anyone have any ideas of any programs or series' that might suit this situation?

  1. Check with your school librarian, or Media Center person.  Many schools have films on hand or can send for them through various agencies.  Also, there are some very good websites that will provide easy levels for hands on activities.  Your Dept. head, also should be able to provide you with materials.  In the past, I've been able to go to the science dept. and get materials they had and modify them for the students; this way they were all learning the same information. Most teachers are very cooperative and willing to help substitutes.

  2. We just finished The Magic School Bus episode where the students go to each planet. It is very good because it talks about what each planet is like.

  3. The Planets video by Eyewitness is pretty good.  I show it to my ninth graders sometimes, but it could easily be used for younger students.  It has weird facts in it, like what planet would float in a bathtub.
