Video camera to laptop

Hello, I have the Panasonic Leica 3.2 mega pixel video camera with some footage I would like to put on my laptop or pc. My computer says it has "found new hardware" but nothing transpires after my USB connection. Is there some software I need? Or am I missing some obvious steps?
