Question:

Video editing software advice?

I want to pan over a map with a line appearing to show the route of a recent journey. General editing is straightforward enough (use Vegas, Studio & Premier Pro) but I don't know how to produce the line as I pan over the map (which is simply a .jpg image). Do I need software for this or is there something in one of the editing packages that can do this for me?

Thanks for your help.

  1. If you have Photoshop that wouldn't be a bad idea, if you know how to use filmstrip files. Google that, they can be a lot of fun, but a lot of work too. Filmstrips just draw all your frames in one image that you can work on in photoshop. Just draw the line longer in each picture, and your good.

If your line is just straight, then it would be easiest to just use keyframes in the editing software. You might be able to do this if the line bends with multiple lines, but that would be harder. Just keyframe the map moving, then use stationary lines over your route, and when it is time to bend, keyframe the line moving off the screen and keyfram the new coming on.

I don't know though, thats an interesting conundrum... I would probably use Photoshop if you can.

  2. you can use Adobe Photoshop (or Paint w/ windows) to draw a 'moving'  line on several copies or layers of the map.jpeg. These are drag & dropped to the timeline in sequential order to simulate a 'moving' route in sync w/ pan & zoom to create emphasis of course.

Highlighting thru Premiere Pro wud be an icing on the cake.

  3. Create a new layer over the map in photoshop, draw your line over the route, apply a guassian blur of 2 or three pixels (or it will moire) save the document as a psd or tif with transparacy preserved.

Open this document in Premier and apply the motion to all layers (pans zoom etc) but set a crop on the uppermost layer half way from the direction of traveland render, your point in the journey will always be at the centre of the on screen map and will grow and shrink in size and move with the map.

Everyone will think you are very clever, and so will i when you give me 10 points.

  4. yes you need software
