Video format question...?

What is the best video format?I mean,i downloaded a movie (.avi),watched it from my pc and it has a pretty good picture but when i burned it and watch it from a dvd player and tv,quality is not good anymore, its a bit pixelized.i used nero to burn it and it said something like it converted it to PAL because most part of the movie is in that format.so i clicked ok.what is the best format when burning movies?i downloaded HD DVD movies and i'm not sure if the quality would really be "HD" once i burn it but i've seen it here in my pc and its perfect. what can you suggest?thanks in advance. Idea about NTSC and PAL?
