Video player wont record when tv is off?

My dad has a video recorder, which works fine, but if you switch the tv off, it will not record. It will just record a black screen. Anyone know what's wrong?

Wiring's probably the wrong way round. You want TV signal going to the VCR first (either RF from a roof aerial or SCART/RCA from a cable/satellite box), then VCR output to TV. You'll probably need to fiddle about with all the settings to make it work, which unfortunately I can't help with as you haven't posted any details of your TV system.
