  1. My only tip regarding casinos is don't go in expecting to win.

  2. What da_hal says is very true. Look for the machines with the higher pay outs.

Also, download some video poker software. Search for Bob Dancer's Video Poker for Winners. It lets you play all the games while correcting you when you make a mistake. All the games have subtle differences. Depending on the payouts for one game it might be correct to hold the pair of 5's, while in another game it might be correct to hold the 2 suited face cards. You need to learn perfect video poker to come close to breaking even.

And make sure to join the slots club, so you can earn points towards free play, meals or rooms. Video poker is a game that pays out around 98-99% when played perfectly. Slots club cards can actually take you over 100%. It's a good way to get the most for your buck.

  3. At many off the strip casinos in Las Vegas, there are machines called Optimum Play that pay out over 100% with proper strategy. They are actually not that hard to find, and surprisingly they are often empty. These are the best machines to play, anywhere.

Of course, you must play proper strategy, which means finding the strategy chart for the game and pay table you're going to be at, and playing it perfectly. Bob Dancer and others make strategy cards you can take with you to the casino that will tell you the correct way to play.

And don't forget to play max coins. The only way to get that 100%+ return is to play max coins.

  4. there's two main schools of thought: grind out small wins over a long period of time, (usually playing the deuces wild variation,) or going for the big payoff.

The deuces wild game used to be awesome when it was two pairs or better for 1:1 payoffs. Nowadays, however, you need trips or better for the 1:1, and all the hands pay out at less than what they're worth. with perfect strategy, you can get about a .1% expected return.

If you play a regular, jacks or better machine, usually the best strategy is to only go for straight flushes and the royal flush at max odds.

one more tip: not all poker machines of the same variety (e.g. deuces wild, jacks or better, 10's or better, etc.) are equal. some machines pay out differently for straights and flushes. The best machines are called 6/5's, while the worse machines are 6/4's. The 6/5's pay out 6X your bet for flushes, 5X for straights. 6/4's only pay out 4 for straights, which will cost you money. Last time I went, though, they were all 6/4's.

  5. Make sure you play to the fullest.  5 quarters or whatever the max it.  I won $1000.
