Vidic sings new deal with Manchester United till 2014
Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has signed a 4 year contract extension with the club, putting an end to speculations that he was on his way out of Old Trafford.
The Serbian captain had long been linked with a move away from Manchester. Italian giants AC Milan were believed to be his most likely destination. Soon after the World Cup in South Africa, Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill flew to Portugal where Vidic was on vacation. It was over here that both parties agreed to terms with him in July. After the verbal agreement, Gill assured Manchester fans that Vidic was not going anywhere. Finally, by signing the papers, Vidic has kept his word.
Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that he never had any worries about Vidic leaving the team. Ferguson claimed that he always had faith that his central defender would stay.
Ferguson clarified that over the past few years, Vidic has become one of the most important players for the club. The manager said that Vidic is one of the best not just in English football but in the world and he would love to have him at Old Trafford for a longer period. Ferguson went on to say that Vidic and Ferdinand have put together an amazing defensive partnership and it would have been difficult to replace him. The Manchester United manager said that the signing of this contract extension by Vidic comes at a good time. Ferguson claimed that it’s a great time for the club. He added that Anderson and Ferdinand are on their way to full fitness and the whole squad looks up for the new season.
Nemanja Vidic was signed by Manchester United back in 2006 from Spartak Moscow. Since then, he has been a regular feature in the team and has been in demand by some of the biggest names in Europe.
Since arriving at Manchester United, Vidic has helped in winning 3 EPL titles, 1 FA Cup, 2 Carling Cups along with the all important Champions League. Back in 2008, when Manchester United won the Champions’ League, it was believed that the partnership between Ferdinand and Vidic at the back was one of the most crucial reasons behind United’s glory.
Vidic, after signing the deal said, that he was delighted to have inked the deal. He said that he came to Manchester United as a raw and young player where he learned a lot and matured to a great degree. Vidic claimed that he owes Ferguson a lot of credit for his development. He added that he wants to stay at Manchester and provide the club with much more joy. The Serbian captain went on to say that he still has a lot more to win with United and the most important thing right now is to win back the EPL title.
Vidic believes that Manchester United is a club that can make any player feel at home. He said that when he came to Old Trafford, he knew no one and was feeling alienated in England. But then every single person in the team as well as the management helped him feel comfortable. Vidic added that when one can feel that he is valued and feels important at the club, then the desire to stay becomes even stronger.
There were rumours in the 2009 season that Vidic was on his way out of Manchester United. Rumours were rife that Vidic had asked for a better pay and Manchester United had declined. But neither Vidic nor United ever confirmed that report and now that is all in the past as he is to stay at the club till the end of 2014 season.
