What is the most hospitable experiences you had when traveled to Viet Nam? My experience was similar to " Sender " when I was treated like an old lost friend when visited a small village in central Viet Nam. What about yours?

  2. Without any doubt, the most hospitable experience in Vietnam for me happened on November 12, 2006.

I woke up that morning, put on my brand new tailor made suite and met the rest of my family in the bottom floor of the house we had on Bach Dang Street in the Hoan Kiem District of Hanoi. My family loaded up in a couple vans while I was escorted to a white Mercedes for a ride to my fiancée’s house on the other side of Hanoi. Thoughts of my single life mixed into living the rest of my live with my beautiful fiancée’ were flowing vividly through my mind while winding through the streets towards our destination.

We arrived at my fiancée’s house and greeted by what seemed to be everyone in Hanoi. My family and I pushed through the crowd to the elevators that led to my fiancée’s condo. When the elevator doors opened, I was greeted again by what seemed to be the whole city of Hanoi. Pushing through the crowd again, I finally arrived at the front door of the condo full of my fiancée’s family. Everyone who was able to talk to us greeted my family and me warmly. We all sat on one side of a very long table as we listened to speeches by several relatives.

This was my Uncle Bui’s shinning moment. Being a retired general, he has made numerous speeches in his life and proceeded to give his best that day. Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of Vietnam’s independence against the French paled in comparison. The speech couldn’t have been more than a few minutes, but it seemed to go on for hours. Finally, my Uncle Bui sat down, and I was asked to greet my fiancee’ in her bedroom.

I had thought that I would be nervous, but I wasn’t. I knew that I had met my soul mate months before, and no one else in my life mattered as much as my fiancee’ did. I opened the door and was greeted by the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my wife. She was dressed in an absolutely gorgeous silk wedding dress. Her hair was perfectly styled. She was absolute beauty and perfection. My face had a smile from ear-to-ear, as I was looking at my new wife for the first time.

Her words to me at that moment were simple, and I will remember them forever.

“I love you with all of my heart my husband…”

  3. I wouldn't really called it "hospitality" per se, but I have had many touching experiences riding my motorcycle around the provinces surrounding Hanoi.

For example, I once stopped at a small roadside shop in a far away village. Inside - the building had no windows, only holes - two dozen kids were watching a video. It was Rambo in full action.

Then they started noticing me and suddenly the bulky hero on screen became irrelevant. A dusty white man in real flesh and blood !! The kids rushed to the window frames and doorway and just stared.

My Vietnamese wasn't good enough to get a conversation going, but

Another time, I stopped in a village. By happenstance, it was outside the village head's house. After a few minutes, he sent his teenage daughter out to invite me in for tea in his "fine" living room. We sat sipping tea, while the daughter - from her seat in the "not so fine" dining room  - translated.

  4. To many good experiences to tell them all.  Vietnam is one of the friendliest and nicest places I have been.  Cheers C
