Question:

Vietnam Apartments?

I am currently searching apartments in Vietnam on craigs list and noticed that none of the apartments seem to have kitchens. This seems to be the same as the homes that are listed for sale. How would an expat prepare meals without a kitchen? Am I not looking at the correct website for listings?

  1. if just for a shot trip, they now have home-stay Vietnam.where you live and eat with a local family, sorry don't know the web address ,but a mate has done it a few times says its great

  2. Vietnamese culture is much different than in the west. As Dude D said, most cooking in Vn is done on an LP or kerosene countertop burner. The very vast majority of Viets do not own a refrigerator, oven or microwave. Food is generally bought fresh at one of the zillions of markets and cooked immediately. Usually, only the more modern condos, apartments or houses built in say, the last twenty years, have kitchen sinks.

The good news though, is that construction costs are very low and you can have a state of the art kitchen with modern appliances put in a residence for less than $3000 usd. (unless you want Viking or Sub-Zero type appliances.)

A good person to talk to in Saigon is Kiet "Kenny" Vuong at Century21Vietnam@yahoo.com

BTW, I don't know where you are planning to stay, but Saigon and Vung Tau have lots of modern apartments/condos on the market right now.

  3. my in-laws live in Ho Chi Minh .... they usually just go out to eat ..... the typical meal for them is only about 1,500 Dong (really cheap!)

Rick m  said it right in his answer (above) ....

I am trying to figure out how to have an extended stay in Ho Chi Minh .... like stay there for about 6 months or something .....

how long do you plan to stay? What is the trick to getting an extended visa?  (I am from the USA) ....   I am having some difficulty in getting this info .....

    thanks .....

  4. I've been in more then a few apartments in Vietnam where the kichen is no more then a counter with a hotplate.  You may have to provide your own hotplate.

  5. Where were you planning to stay? We found a studio apartment in Hanoi at a great price and in the best location on Truc Bach island. It had a basic kitchen - hotplate, microwave, fridge etc. They are difficult to find though!
