Vietnam Open Grand Prix: Lindaweni Fanetri stuns Sapsiree Taerattanachai in semi-final showdown
Indonesia’s most spirited shuttler Lindaweni Fanetri defied all odds to surge into Women’s Singles final after putting up staggering show of top quality badminton in semi-final showdown when she overpowered Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand at the Vietnam
Open Grand Prix 2012 on Saturday, August 25, in Vietnam.
The lower ranked Lindaweni, who has been shaking the boat of top class shuttlers in her way to semi-final, continued her killing run and overpowered her higher ranked Thai opponent in a spectacular three-set contest.
The un-seeded Lindaweni could not make a good use of her lofty skills in opening set but she proved her mettle in the following games and won the match in rubber sets with a reasonable difference on score board.
The fourth seeded Sapsiree grabbed the opening game easily but failed to create pressure on her Indonesian opponent in the following sets and lost the match with a respectable margin.
The Thai shuttler played dominating badminton in opening set of the match and remained successful in setting up a good lead until the end of first half.
After the mid-game interval, Lindaweni tried to narrow the deficit on score board by gearing up her speed but failed to make it happen and eventually lost the first set with a six-point difference of 15-21.
Nevertheless, the second game was different from the previous one as Lindaweni played positive and aggressive badminton and remained close until the break.
After taking rest for one minute, Indonesian shuttler continued putting up positive show of attacking badminton and maintained her upper hand against her fourth seeded Thai opponent.
Lindaweni was focused at the ending phase of second set and she took it with a superb 21-16 score on the board.
The deciding game was also entertaining until the opening half when both ladies remained toe-to-toe.
However, Lindaweni dictated the terms of the game after the mid-game interval and managed to set up a reasonable lead. She remained in commanding position in the ending points and took the set with a margin of 21-16.
The in-form Lindaweni ousted Sapsiree in three games with a superb 15-21, 21-16 and 21-16 score on the board.
