"Hello all

is it possible for a foriegner to be a tour guide in Vietnam? I am moving to Nha Trang in less than 6 weeks to be with my girlfriend. I have been an english teacher before, but I wouldn't mind trying something new. Now Nha Trang is a big tourist destination - would people use a foriegn tour guide vs. a local?

Now last year I had one local guide who was absolutely wonderful(she was in Chau Doc). She really set the tone for my vietnamese trip and I just absolutely loved (and fell in love) Vn. But sometimes the access to Vietnamese who speak good english isn't readily available, and thats why a foriegner might come in handy. Just wondering peoples opinions. Lets get some discussion going.

No, it is impossible for foreigner to be a legal tour guide in Vietnam but you can be an expat to work at travel agentcy as trip Adviser or Sale man.

first of all you will need a work permit, with that in hand, or while waiting for it to be issued, you will need to learn all about the sites and history of nha trang.  the next thing that you will need to do is learn to speak vietnamese so you can deal (and most importantly, haggle) with shop and cafe owners, drivers etc. finally, you will need to find a job with a tour agency or else buy a minibus, hire a driver and advertise. don't forget, there are lot's of people who visit vietnam who don't speak english.

i don't know your finances but for the price of a new minibus you could open another business, such as a cafe or bar, that caters to english speakers. for less money, you and your girlfriend could open an english school. just don't forget about the red tape

Yes you can! In fact I've met many foreign tour guides, and they are loving it!

It is possible but it will take time. First, it's best if you get an English teaching job. Then, spend time while in Vietnam learning about Nha Trang and the surrounding areas as well as learning Vietnamese.

Some of your students will most likely be Vietnamese tour guides or potential tour guides so befriend them. They may show you the rope and even introduce you to the tour operators when you're ready to apply for a job as a tour guide

Do you really have the language, knowledge, cultural understanding and local rapport to become a tour guide. I suspect not nor would the Vietnamese particularly wish for a foreigner to represent their culture and country.

I think you'd be better off seeking another English teaching job.

it is possible, unless he knows the places, the history, and what he is talking about. most of all he should be trained.......
