Question:

Viewing distance for an hdtv and hd projector?

I'm thinking about getting an hdtv or hd projector. The problem is i want to put it in my bedroom and it's not that big. If i were to buy an hdtv, i would get a 26". The viewing distance from where i would sit would be about 6 feet. If i were to buy a hd projector i would want an 80" and the viewing distance from where i would sit would be about 9 feet. Would this be a good viewing distance and would the resolution make a difference?

  1. IMO, 9 feet for an 80" screen would be too close. I have a 50" and sit about 8 feet away, and it's a bit too close.

  2. It is not the normal approach to pick a screen size first. It is usual to pick the size based on distance.  That said, 9 ft for an 80" screen (16:9) is just about bang on the THX recommended size. See the 1st link. Note that distances are most applicable to HD projectors and programming.

Note that there is no single RIGHT size screen though, since everyone has somewhat different preferences. Think of where you would normally sit in a movie theatre. If you like to sit near the front @ 9 ft you could go even bigger than 80". But if you would sit near the back, 80" may be too big.

Note that in considering a projector you need to choose one with suitable "throw distance". It would be easiest if you could fill the size screen you want from a rear-wall shelf-mounted projector. See the 2nd link for a calculator The same site has lots of good reviews and other info. too).

  3. min of 2x the screen height max of 3x of screen height is optimal range.
