Viewing using a powerpoint projector

Question

HELP! I am attempting to use the powerpoint projector at the college I work. My problem is-is that the cabel from the projector to my laptop will not work because the cable end for the lap top is not one of those "s***w in" type. My lap top only has a small VGA- not one that also has to have the two s***w in holes on each side. I went to Best Buy and they sugested I get a S-Video cable. Brought it home and my lap top does not have a plug for this type of cable.
If it helps- I have a Gateway- 2 years old.
I looked all over at Best Buy and there wasn't a cable that had a s***w in end and a jusy plug in end! Hope this makes sense- I am not very savoy in this area!
