Vigil Games on Current Generation Consoles – Video Games Update
The lead developer of Darksiders 2 has revealed the downside of the next generation and believes that there is still plenty of juice left in the current generation consoles.
In an interview with BrutalGamer, Darksiders 2 Lead designer Haydn Dalton has stated that right now there is no need for next generation consoles as according to his opinion, the current generation consoles have plenty of life left. He claims that developers
have finally mastered developing for the current generation consoles and will be able to get the most out of the hardware.
“The idea of a new platform is always exciting for a developer, but it begins the cycle of learning new tech, finding its strengths and shortcomings, developing your tool sets and where and how you can get the best out the system, for the type of game you’re
developing. Not to mention releasing something to a developing market, which is a whole different issue,” stated Dalton while explaining the downside of new consoles.
This opinion is completely contrary to that of many other publishers and developers who have been stressing that the current generation has gone on long enough and it is about time that Microsoft and Sony bring the console hardware up to speed with the PC
counterparts.
The reason behind that may be the difference in developer technology. Square Enix, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are industry leaders when it comes to good looking games and all three of those publishers have already revealed their next generation game engines
which will not live up to their full potential on the current generation consoles. So it is understandable why they will want to push for next generation.
Darksiders 2 on the other hand is not pushing any visual boundaries. This doesn’t mean that the game isn’t a looker by any means, just that its’ not pushing the technical limitations of the consoles when compared to the latest engines in development by Square
Enix, DICE, Crytek and Ubisoft.
THQ is also having a lot of financial troubles and is looking for a hit in Darksiders 2. The publisher has already revealed that the series will only get a third instalment if Darksiders 2 does well in the market. The game comes out tomorrow for the Xbox
360, PlayStation 3 and PC so be sure to check it out.
