Vijay Mallya believes 2014 rules by FIA may press smaller teams – Formula 1 news
Force India team principal, Vijay Mallya has said that the rules for the 2014 Formula 1 season by the FIA may press smaller teams in the sport.
There are going to be some drastic changes in the technical regulations by the FIA and all the teams will use new 1.6-litre V6 engines in the next season. Eventually, every team will have to bear huge costs to follow the changes in the rules. Therefore,
Mallya believes that the increase in costs will have a negative impact on the sustainability of the sport and will squeeze the smaller contenders.
“Well, I fear that is for sure. Rather than reducing costs, one or two teams have decided winning at any cost is more important than the sustainability of the sport, so there is no resource restriction that is implemented, quite contrary to the fact that
costs are going up,” he said.
Besides, he said that the small teams must be given due importance so as to promote everyone’s interest instead of just caring about few.
“If you only want three or four teams in Formula 1 running three cars each you should proceed in the way it is now,” he explained.
“But I think Formula 1 also needs the smaller independent teams as well, so everybody must also look at common interests, not only the individual interests,” he added.
In addition, he said that all the stakeholders of F1 can surely find a common solution to the ongoing problem so as to create stability in the sport.
Almost all the big teams are already focussing on the development of their next year’s cars which mainly include Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and McLaren. Meanwhile, Williams have signed a new contract with Mercedes-Benz which will provide them engine for their
car from the next season onwards.
The Silverstone based squad have emerged as one of the most competent midfield contenders since the last season. Furthermore, they are currently standing ahead of the Woking based team at 5th position with 44 points in the constructors’ championship. Let’s
see how they make the essential developments for the next season.
