Vijay Singh takes opening round lead at the Greenbrier Classic
Fijian Vijay Singh fired a seven-under par 63 in the opening round of the Greenbrier Classic, at the Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, to take the lead on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Singh got off to a slow start and carded only two birdies against a lone bogey to settle for a one-under par score through the front nine.
Thereafter, he picked up some pace and carded six birdies on the final eight holes that he played. The highlight of his performance includes four straight birdies to end the round.
He now has a one-stroke lead over the Americans, Jeff Maggert, Martin Flores and Jonathan Byrd.
“I don't know where that (score) came from,” he said. “I've been playing pretty good golf for a while but just never got any scoring going. But today seemed I hit it close and drove the ball really well, hit a lot of greens and made some nice putts”.
According to Singh, the atmosphere at the course was really good early in the morning. The breeze was pleasant and it was much cooler compared to the heat in the afternoon.
Therefore, it was comparatively easy to score low in the morning than in the afternoon or evening.
“It was cooler and it was light breeze, so it was good scoring conditions,” he said. “If you hit good shots to the green, you're going to have a lot of birdie chances, a lot of short holes where you can hit wedges, 9-irons and 8-irons close, so that's what
I did”.
Overall, he looked really happy with his performance, as it came after a very long time. Throughout the 2012 PGA Tour season, he managed to record only one top-10 finish in 17 events that he has played so far.
Apart from that, he is also winless on the PGA Tour since his victory in the Deutsche Bank Championship, in September 2008.
Therefore, he now has a chance of ending his winning drought on the PGA Tour, should he maintain consistency in the remaining rounds.
In the meantime, the winner of last week’s AT&T National, Tiger Woods, did not start like he wanted to and went one-over par for the first round.
