Vijay took the game away from us: Sehwag – Cricket News Update
Delhi Daredevils skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 praised the recent batting performance of Chennai Super Kings batsman Murali Vijay, saying the 28-year-old right-hander was the prime reason behind his team’s 86-run defeat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk,
Chennai on May 25.
“The way Vijay played, he took the game away from us, then they have a good batting line-up and it took it away. It was a good pitch and you could score 180 was chaseable, but 40 more runs was going to be difficult to chase,” Sehwag said.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 Daredevils dominated the league stage of the Indian Premier League’s 2012 edition, and finished at the top of the table. However, they were unable to carry the momentum into the playoffs stage, and after suffering an 18-run defeat to the Kolkata
Knight Riders in the first qualifier, lost to the Chennai Super Kings by 86 runs in the second qualifier match – the biggest IPL defeat in terms of run margin.
The defeat owed largely to poor team selection - ace wicket-taker http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Irfan-Pathan-c1601 injured, the selectors included virtually unknown off-spinner Sunny Gupta (who had never played an IPL match before) and all-rounder Andre
Russell. In addition, the batting line-up was also shuffled around, with Sehwag not opening as he has down throughout the tournament, but coming in at number 3 instead.
However, the most devastating factor behind the team’s defeat was the stellar batting performances of the opposing batsmen, particularly http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Vijay-c1867. The Daredevils won the toss and opted to field first, but the Super Kings’ batsmen were more than they
could handle.
Vijay scored a colossal 113 off 58 deliveries, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJ-Bravo-c1379 (33) chipping in with useful contributions. In the end, the Super Kings managed to set their opponents a mammoth 223-run chase.
The Daredevils’ batsmen were unable to rise to the challenge, and with the individuals scores not rising above 55 (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397), the team were all out by the 17th over, having managed to amass only 136 runs.
Despite the defeat, however, Sehwag expressed a positive outlook, claiming they were happy to have reached the final stage, and would be looking to improve on their performances in the upcoming Champions League.
“Lot of positives, not expected us to end number one after the league, thanks to the owners for backing us, we will try and come back hard in the Champions League,” he said.
