How long before approval by group owner?

It all depends on when the owner/moderator gets around to it.  The owner/moderator has up to 14 days to accept or reject your membership.  If after 14 days, the owner/moderator still hasn't done anything about it, then the Yahoo servers automatically convert your pending membership into a rejected membership (and you get an e-mail saying so).  If this becomes the case, it means that the owner/moderator has probably abandoned the Group, so you should probably look for a different Group to join.

Note that Yahoo staff can't do anything about this, so it'd be useless to contact them.

Check the activity chart below the group it will show the number of posts if there isn't much going on, look for another group.  When I looked, in May only 7 posts.  Not very busy.
