Vikings Brett Favre still not cleared to play on Sunday
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has failed a baseline neurological exam administered to him on Wednesday.
The test is required by the NFL for players who have suffered a concussion. Favre did not play in Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which they won thanks to rookie quarterback Joe Webb. He sustained his concussion in his Week 15 game against
the Chicago Bears.
Leslie Frazier, interim head coach for the Vikes, said on Wednesday that Favre would take the test on Thursday. But after the news conference, Favre was administered the test because he was antsy and wanted to play in what might be the last game of his career.
Frazier said that if Favre were well, he would start on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
"We'd love to see him play," Frazier said Wednesday. "It's really not a hard decision for me. Brett is a terrific player. We feel very comfortable when he's on the field that we have a great chance to win, so you always want to put the guy out there who
is going to give you the best chance to win. If Brett is healthy I think our entire team feels very confident that we have a great chance to win when he's the starting quarterback."
However, Webb, the sixth round draft pick hailing from Alabama-Birmingham, played well against Philly. He completed 16 passes out of 26 attempts for 195 passing yards, and ran 31 yards which included a touchdown. Incredibly, he made no turnovers in his first
professional game.
Sunday’s game against the Lions will most likely be the last for Favre. He has been playing for over 20 years and holds many records in the NFL, including being the only quarterback with over 70,000 passing yards, more than 500 touchdowns and over 10,000
pass attempts.
He also holds one of the most astounding records in the NFL, or any sport for that matter- 297 consecutive starts. This record dates back to 1992 and ended just a few weeks ago, with Favre sitting out for the Vikings game against the New York Giants with
a shoulder injury.
He holds many other records such as most interceptions, completions, starts, fumbles, sacks and victories.
Favre says that he will retire at the end of the season. However, nobody will believe it until they see it because he has changed his mind before.
Favre still has to pass a number of neurological tests before he can be cleared to play. With only three days left until the game, Favre needs all the preparation time he can get.
