Viktor Axelsen stuns Tommy Sugiarto in Men’s Singles second round of Swiss Open GP Gold 2012
Denmark’s emerging young shuttler Viktor Axelsen stole the limelight when he crushed the in-form Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia in Men’s Singles second round at Swiss Open GP Gold 2012 in Switzerland, on Wednesday, March 14.
Axelsen, who is placed at number 29 in the Men’s Singles world standings, displayed a stunning performance and ousted the World Number 16 Sugiarto, who has been playing remarkable badminton for the last six months.
The young Axelsen showed his brilliance against the higher ranked Indonesian rival and ended the match in straight games by consuming just 38 minutes.
It was a wonderful show for the local fans as they were not expecting Axelsen to overcome the in-form Sugiarto.
However, the young Danish proved that he is ready to challenge the top shuttlers in the world as he played with courage and hammered Sugiarto without losing even a single game.
On the other hand, Sugiarto was completely helpless against the impressive and flawless play of his Danish opponent and lost the match without creating an impact.
In the first set, it was Axelsen who took over the control from the starting points and remained successful in setting up a remarkable lead of 11-2.
His shot selection and execution was impressive and he also did not let his opponent to find a good rhythm.
After the break, Sugiarto changed his tactics but could not find his flow as his opponent was not sparing any room.
Axelsen continued playing top quality badminton in the ending part of first set and finished it with a decent score of 21-18.
In the second game, Axelsen was the first to get into a commanding position as he played positive and safe badminton. He remained slightly ahead of his rival and established a reasonable gap of 11-8 until the one-minute break.
After the break, Sugiarto accelerated his speed but failed to put pressure on his spirited opponent who was fully focused in the game.
Axelsen did not drop his speed and managed to win the second set with a sensational 21-12 score on the board.
This Men’s Singles straight-set contest ended with the victory of Axelsen who crushed his opponent with an impressive margin of 21-18 and 21-12.
