Viktor Troicki; A look at the Kremlin Cup champion this season
Born on 10 February 1986 in the city of Belgrade, Viktor Troicki is a professional tennis player from Serbia. The twenty four year old Viktor who achieved his career high ranking of world number twenty four back in 2009 is currently
ranked number thirty three in the world by the Association of Tennis Professionals.
The right hander captured his first ATP singles crown at the Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition last week in Moscow after getting the better of Marcos Baghdatis in the title battle. The Serbian also won an ATP doubles crown
along with his partner Christopher Kas at the PTT Thailand Open earlier this season.
Viktor started playing the game of tennis at the age of five. From 2003 onwards, the twenty four year old started competing in Future events in his country and next year, the Serbian won his first tennis competition in Nis. The
1.93 meters tall won his first Challenger Competition in Belgrade back in 2005, after brushing aside Fabio Colangelo of Italy in two sets. The final match score was 6–2, 6–1.
The Belgrade born made his debut on the tour at the Japan Open in Tokyo back in 2006. He won his opening round clash, defeating Fernando Vicente of Spain in three sets just to fall down at the hands of the Swiss tennis maestro,
Roger Federer in the following round in a close two set battle. The final scoreline was 7–6(2), 7–6(3).
Back in 2007, the professional tennis player from Serbia registered his biggest victory as a qualifier over the world number three Novak Djokovic in his second round match, knocking him down in three sets. The final match score
was 2–6, 6–4, 7–5. However, Viktor eventually was defeated in his first final four battle by Andrei Pavel from Romania.
As far as his performance this season is concerned, Viktor started the year by playing in the 2010 Qatar ExxonMobil Open Men’s singles competition, seeded number five, only to win the title. He successfully made his way into the
semifinal after beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Olivier Rochus as well as Lukasz Kubot, however he eventually lost to the world number one Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets.
The Serbian next competed at the 2010 Medibank International Sydney where he got the better of Florent Serra in a two setter opener only to lose at the hands of Marcos Baghdatis in the second round. The final match score was 7-5,
6-3.
Viktor was once again bundled out in the second round of the year’s first Grand Slam - the Australian Open in Melbourne by Florian Mayer in four sets. The final scoreline was 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2), 6-1.
At the 2010 PBZ Zagreb Indoors, the Serbian did well to reach the quarter final round after beating Rainer Schuttler and Mikhail Kukushkin in the initial rounds. In the final eight however, he was upset by Michael Berrer in two
sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3.
Viktor then withdrew versus Jurgen Melzer in the opening round of the 2010 ABN AMRO World Tennis championship as a result of an elbow injury while trailing at 6-3, 3-0. After making a return on the tour, the right hander couldn’t
go beyond his second round match at the 2010 Dubai Tennis Tournament, as he was defeated by his compatriot opponent Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
At the 2010 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Viktor was seeded number twelve to win the title. He first defeated Lukasz Kubot in his opening round match in three sets with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-2, and 6-2. In the next round, the Serbian
however was downed by Tommy Robredo.
In more recent performances, the twenty four year old Viktor captured the first ATP World Tour crown of his career in Moscow, after beating Marcos Baghdatis in the title battle in three sets. The final match score was 3-6, 6-4,
6-3. On his way into the final, the Serbian brushed aside Pablo Cuevas, Horacio Zeballos, Dmitry Tursunov as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
