Viktor Troicki battles it out against John Isner in the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 15, Viktor Troicki of Serbia, carried on his magnificent form to defeat the unseeded American contestant, John Isner in the second round of Rogers Cup on Wednesday afternoon.
The competition was staged on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, with the 12th seed Serb winning the three-setter at 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, to make it in to the round of 16 of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
An exciting contest was played between the two men, with momentum oscillating in the game throughout. Troicki took the opening set but let the American rebound in the following set to level the matchup. The Serb then turned the tables on Isner in the final set and claimed his 33rd victory of the running ATP season and a place in the third round of Montreal Masters.
The 28th ranked American contestant squandered away eight out of his 10 break opportunities in the matchup and converted just two of them to finish the matchup on the losing side. On the other hand, Troicki cashed in four out of five break points and bagged 89 out of 162 total points being played in the game en route to victory.
The first serve break of the day came in the fifth game of the opening set from Troicki, who went on to seal the first set at 6-4 to get on e up in the game. Isner replied with two consecutive serve breaks in the second set and levelled the matchup by clinching the set at 6-3 to enforce a decisive third.
Troicki took hold of the final set with an early serve break to race away to 3-0 lead and then kept pressing his opponent to submit in the rest of the game. A second break point conversion closed out the third set at 6-2 for Troicki, sending him into the third round of the tournament to face the fifth seeded French contestant, Gael Monfils, for a place in the quarter-finals. Monfils was successful against the American qualifier, Alex Bogomolov, 6-2, 7-6(5), in the second round of Rogers Cup to meet Troicki.
Troicki avenged his defeat, which his suffered earlier this season at the hands of Isner in Washington, falling at 6-7(5), 6-3, 1-6, in the quarter-finals of the tournament. The Serb now leads the overall head-to-head series against Isner by 3-1 after his Wednesday’s victory.
