Viktor Troicki ousts Bernard Tomic in second round at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open
World number 18 Viktor Troicki of Serbia surpassed world number 187 Bernard Tomic of Australia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the second round at BNP Paribas Open on Sunday. The tournament is being held at the tennis gardens of Indian
Wells, California.
Troicki, who is 25 years old, currently enjoys his career best ranking of being 18h in the world. His opponent, Bernard Tomic, on the other hand is only 18 years old and has been playing tennis professionally for just 2 years.
Troicki has one title to his name so far and received a bye to compete directly in the second round and took one hour and thirty three minutes to conclude his triumph advancing to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.
The 25 year old Serbian completely governed the match as he played phenomenally in both sets. The match appeared to be a one-sided affair as he put massive pressure upon Australian, who ended up bowing down to his opponent.
Troicki served remarkably well in the first set as he fired in 8 aces. He hit 46 per cent of the first serves in the opening set, winning a whopping 86 per cent, a much better percentage than Tomic, who only managed to win a meager
68 per cent. His opponent's dull serving provided him with 5 break points out of which he saved all of them. Troicki’s outstanding display of tennis emerged him victorious when he broke the Australian in the tenth game wrapping up a 6-4 win in his favor.
Troicki gaining confidence from the first set win was all set to dominate the second one as well. Keeping the first serves ticking on almost even terms, Troicki luckily managed to convert them into 83 per cent points a lot higher
than his contender’s who only managed to win a meager 61 per cent.
Win on serve provided him with the edge that he needed to wrap up a straight sets victory. Troicki registered a 6-4 win in the second set again.
Sealing his victory against Tomic, Troicki now leads the pair’s career head-to-head by 1-0. Sporting a 13-5 win loss mark for the season, Troicki is currently on a splendid run in the season so far.
He now moves on ahead to face the 24th seeded French Michael Llodra. A seed at the event here, Llodra received a bye into the second round of the event. This will be the 2nd meeting between these two players. Troicki leads Llodra
1-0 in the head-to-head record. In their last meeting 1 year ago, the 25-year-old defeated Llodra 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch Serbia's first Davis Cup ever.
