Viktor Troicki pounds Dmitry Tursunov in quarterfinal – Malaysian Open 2011
Friday, 30th September, kicked off with the quarter-final round of the Malaysian Open 2011. Viktor Troicki, Serbian world No.15, went on to battle for the semi-final seat against Dmitry Tursunov at the Putra Stadium,
Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on hard indoor court. Fighting hard for an hour and sixteen minutes, Troicki swiped away the quarterfinal winning 6-4, 6-4, to move on to the semi-final round of the ATP Tour 250 event.
Playing against each other for the second time this season, Tursunov was looking to settle the scores as he had lost the previous fixture between the two. Altogether, the two came head on for the fourth time. Troicki, however,
had won all the three previous ties against the 28-year-old Russian.
Winning the toss, the Russian world No.41 switched on the match serving the first game, however, Troicki broke his counterpart the first game they played, 0-1. With a stunning reply, Tursunov broke back to level the scores and
stood to return next, 1-1.
The set ignited as the Serbian broke for the second time in 3 games, serving out the fourth and taking the lead 3-1. Following the world No.15, the Russian won his second game cutting down the lead to 2-3. Speeding ahead, the Serbian
kept on extending his lead until game 7.
Serving out the 7th game, Tursunov broke the higher ranked rival to level the scores at 4-4. However, unable to gain any advantage from the breakpoint, the Russian fell short next, game 9, and lost a breakpoint, 4-5,
with Troicki to serve next. Serving out the final game the Serbian bagged the set winning 6-4 and moved on to the 2nd.
With one set to go for his win, Troicki went ballistic, breaking Tursunov again in the first game of the second set and serving out the next, 2-0. The Serbian repeated the beating again as he broke-n-served out next to extend his
lead to 4-0.
The 28-year-old finally managed to bag his first game, 1-4, rolling down his side of the scoreboard. However, Tursunov could not stop the outstanding Serbian from extending is lead. With score now at 5-1, the Russian pulled back
in the set as he serve-broke-served cutting the lead down to 4-5.
Troicki, with just one game left to secure a win, served out game 10 with a lighting forehand, winning the set, 6-4, and the match in straight sets to chair the semis.
The Serbian world No.15, seeded third in the event, will play Marcos Baghdatis for a spot in the final match here.
