Viktor Troicki proceeds to the quarterfinals at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters
It was a lucky break for Viktor Troicki at the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters as Tommy Robredo of Spain withdrew from their match. Despite the fact that Robredo had a 6-3 lead in the first set, he gave up the match at 2-1 for Troicki. For Robredo, it was all over in one hour and seven minutes.
Troicki, who hails from Serbia, failed to leave an impression in the first round of the match. Although he scored two aces, he also committed one double fault and could only win 9 of 16 points on his first serve. Robredo scored less aces, managing just one, but also kept his game error-free and went on to take 68 per cent of his first serve points. In addition to this, the player managed to save four of five break points during the match. Viktor Troicki, on the other hand, was broken two of five times during the first set. The first part of the match was nine service and return games long, as Tommy Robredo took an easy 6-3 lead.
However, the match took an unexpected turn in the next set, as Troicki saved one break point and took nine of thirteen points before Tommy Robredo called it quits. This is highly unusual for a tennis player who is leading the match by an entire set, and came as a shock to the entire stadium. The Spanish World Number 29 was reportedly suffering from a thigh injury which made his continued performance at the match impossible. The score-line at this time was 6-3, 1-2 to Robredo.
This is the second time that he has faced setbacks due to injuries. His woes began at the Indian Wells Masters last month, where he was forced to withdraw from the prestigious tournament before confronting Argentine’s Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinal. He was quoted as saying, “I am out of here. And I am out of Miami, as well.”
Eleventh seed and World Number 16 Viktor Troicki will be competing against David Ferrer of Spain in the quarterfinals.
