Viktor Troicki takes down Michael Yani in the opening round – Rogers Cup 2011
World number 15, Viktor Troicki of Serbia made his way to the second round of Rogers Cup after defeating the American qualifier, Michael Yani, in the opening round clash on Tuesday afternoon.
The 25-year-old Serb exhibited a brilliant game of tennis on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, winning the three-setter at 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, to oust Yani from the competition. Seeded at number 12 in the tournament, Troicki took one hour and twenty four minutes to clinch victory and advanced to the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event in Montreal.
The American qualifier had a brilliant start to the contest and took the opener in authoritative manner to get the upper hand in the game early. He gave crucial opportunities to the 12th seed to make a comeback in the next set and Troicki fully capitalized upon the vital moment to reel off the next two set, registering his 33rd victory of the running ATP season.
As usual, Troicki made his magnificent serve his primary weapon of destruction, firing in 11 thudding aces and bagging 34 out of 40 first serve points in the game to come out as the winner. Only two double faults were recorded by the Serbian and he registered four out of eight break points en route to victory.
Troicki was off to a poor start in the opening set and suffered two straight serve breaks from the American contestant to fall on his back foot. Yani took the opener at 6-2 but posed a pathetic performance with the racquet in the rest of the game to let his opponent fly away with victory. Troicki collected 11 out of 12 first serve points and nailed two successive break points to take the second set in his name at 6-3.
The 12th seeded Serb continued with his belligerence in the final set as well and gave away no opportunity to Yani to get the better of him. Troicki cracked in two more serve breaks to close out the third set at 6-1, disposing of the American contestant from the tournament in an assertive manner. Troicki’s victory sends him into the second round of Rogers Cup, where he will face the winner of the match between Marcos Baghdatis and John Isner, in his next matchup. The contest between Baghdatis and Isner was suspended due to rain on Tuesday afternoon and will be concluded on Wednesday now.
