Viktor Troicki trumps Tommy Robredo; races into the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo
Viktor Troicki of Serbia raced into the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters, when his opponent Tommy Robredo of Spain retired from the second set due to an adductor injury. The match lasted for one hour and seven minutes in Troicki’s favour.
Turned pro in 2006, Troicki is currently 16th in the ATP singles rankings list. The Serb couldn’t reach the fourth rounds at the Miami and Indian Wells Masters, losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets on both occasions. The Serbian has not claimed any title so far, though he reached the finals of the Medibank International Sydney, defeating Juan Ignacio Chela, Richard Gasquet and Florian Mayer, before losing to Gilles Simon of France in straight sets 5-7, 6-7(4).
With this win, the Serbian has extended his win total to nineteen matches for the season. Troicki had been the part of tournament twice in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In 2009 he couldn’t reach the round of 32 and lost to Stanislas Wawrinka in straights sets. Following that loss, he made a comeback and moved past Lukasz Kubot of Poland in straight sets before losing to Robredo in a two setter fight.
In the whole match, Troicki delivered 73 percent of his first serves correctly, but only managed to carry off 62 percent points on first serves and a meager 36 percent on second serves. Robredo on the other hand, had definitely earned better scores than his Serbian opponent in almost all areas. His first serves conversion rate on stats was 64 percent and 60 percent on second serves. Robredo clinched 80 percent of breakpoint opportunities whereas the Serbian again hanged back with a meager 67 percent. In fact, lady luck was on his side that day, so he walked away with a 3-6, 2-1 score line into the quarterfinals.
Emerging victorious with such a lopsided victory, Troicki is all-set to face David Ferrer of Spain in the quarterfinals. Given their two meetings on court, Ferrer leads their head-to-head by 2-0. Pair’s last meeting came at the 2009 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Canada.
