Villa de Lago ride into finals of the Freebooter Classic Cup – US Polo Recap
Villa de Lago moved on with a victory over Goose Creek in the semi-final play in the Freebooter Classic Cup being held at the International Polo Club, Wellington. Although Goose Creek were looking that they were going to run out the ultimate successors after
the five frames, steaming ahead Villa de Lago, Carlucho Arellano scored the go-ahead goal in the sudden-death overtime and sealed the Villa de Lago triumph at 12-11.
In the first chukker, Villa de Lago obtained a goal by handicap and added another from the field in the hands of Agustin Obregon. In a counterattack, Martin Zingers marked a couple of goals of which one came on a penalty shot while other from the field and
tied the knots at two-all. Another Goose Creek score went up on the scoreboard from Jose Donoso to end the first chukker with Goose Creek holding a narrow one-goal, 3-2 lead.
The second frame was dominated by Goose Creek, as it got another three goals while minimising Villa de Lago only for a single score. The trio of Goose Creek including Donoso, Zegers and Geronimo Obregon added one goal each and stretched the lead to three
goals. Carlucho Arellano notched the only goal of the frame for Villa de Lago and trailed 6-3 at the end of the second period.
The Villa de Lago attack came alive in the third chukker, but could not reduce the wide difference. Arellano scored all the three goals for Villa de Lago to creep the score closer and closer. Donoso converted a penalty shot and retained a one-point, 7-6
lead after the three chukkers.
The duo teams exchanged a couple of goals in the fourth set of play before Villa de Lago started to press Goose Creek in the game. Zegers marked a goal through a 60-yard spot shot which was responded by a goal from Tomas Obregon. Goose Creek led the game
with a single point advantage, 8-7 after the four chukkers.
The attackers of Villa de Lago revved up in the game and received three points while holding Goose Creek goalless in the fifth period. Tomas Obregon notched all the three points and put Villa de Lago ahead on the scoreboard with a two-goal, 10-8 advantage.
Zegers opened the final set of play with a penalty conversion for Goose Creek while Arellano in a counter-offensive marked another goal for Villa de Lago to retain a two-goal, 11-9 lead.
In a stunning move, Goose Creek succeeded to level the score before the final whistle and made the game more interesting. Zegers notched another goal while Maureen Brennan had it all even through a penalty conversion. The duo teams went into the sudden death
overtime with an 11-all deadlock.
After a small break, Villa de Lago and Goose Creek landed onto the field with a determination to ruin the defence of either side. Two minutes into the extra-time, Arellano managed to take the ball and risked a long hit which moved into the goalposts. Villa
de Lago after the nail-biting game rode away the field with a 12-11 victory and earned a spot in the finals of the Freebooter Classic.
Carlucho Arellano lit the lamp five teams while Tomas Obregon and Agustin Obregon notched four and two points respectively.
Zegers was a highest point-scorer of the match with six scores while Donoso added two goals. Geronimo Obregon and Brennan accounted for one goal each in the losing effort.
