Hi! In 2 weeks I am going to visit my fiancee who is from England for 2 weeks and I am flying into London and we are heading back to Braunton/Barnstaple area.

So I am looking for some inexpensive areas to get a hotel for the night inbetween London and Barnstaple.

-I DONT want to go somewhere that is very popular that he's probably been to before, I want somewhere that he's never been to, like off the beaten track. (and not clovelly)

Thanks!! Jill

  1. Hi Jill - pick an area (large Town) between London and North Devon which is your maximum travel distance for the first day.

Go into the web and search for, say, "Taunton Tourist Information Office".  They will be able to give you details of accommodation in their area.  Difficult to advise since we don't know which route you are taking or how far you are travelling that day.  Taunton is Somerset, by the way, if you are unfamiliar with England's Counties.

Porlock has a nice pub with accomodation, but it may be off your route.

  2. In all honesty none of us can answer your question properly because we have no idea where he has already been.  London to Barnstaple is a big area so your best bet would be to ask him whereabouts he would like to stay and then ask here if anyone knows of anywhere in that area....

  3. Lynton and Lynmouth are very nice - actually Lynmouth is the more picturesque, but they're very close to each other (a matter of walking up the hill!), so you could visit both.

You can also walk along to Watersmeet which is a beautiful stretch of river (or rivers, as the name suggests, the waters meet there).

In fact, the whole coastal area along there is beautiful and definitely worth a visit.

You might get an inexpensive hotel in Minehead, but Lynton and Lynmouth have some hotels too which could be worth researching before you go (some friends of mine used to run one in Lynton, called the Chough's Nest, but I'm not sure how much it is to stay there these days - very good views from some of the rooms).

  4. My village and nearby villages are very quiet yet have many people to chat to. My village is Dersingham and I recommend Sandringham my nearby village whih is where the Queen lives ^_^. At the moment she is holding a flower festival. I do hope you come here, we love tourists and we are not crowded with people.

P.S. we are in East Anglia
