Villarreal coach signs contract extension
Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido has penned a contract extension that ties him to the club until 2014.
The club's manager was promoted from the B team to fill the void left by the departed Ernesto Valverde in February and has proven to be a near-perfect fit for the job.
Garrido eventually helped the club finish in seventh place in La Liga last term, which helped Villarreal gaining entry into the UEFA Europa League after Mallorca were kicked out of the competition by UEFA.
However, Garrido was able to create his own stamp on the team over the summer and has guided the Yellow Submarines into third place in the division, earning plaudits for his brand of attractive, attacking football along the way.
Garrido has been rewarded for his performance with a long-term deal and, now that his future has been clarified, he says that he is ready to focus on bringing silverware to the club.
He told reporters: “I'm not surprised by the proposal from the club, because they have recognised the good work that I have done here. For me Villarreal is a big challenge. It is a very demanding club, as it should be, We are on the verge of a title-winning
team, because we will continue to grow and will eventually get a title.
“It is a growing club that has a spectacular future ahead. If we continue to play as we have, we can challenge any team. The fact is that staying at Villarreal for many years allows me to talk about titles. I know their growth, and I think that we can because
we have everything here to do it.”
Garrido will hope to make up ground on Real Madrid and Barcelona, eight and seven points ahead of Villarreal respectively, when his side take on Real Zaragoza on Saturday 27 November.
