Villarreal thrash Twente 3-1 to progress to semi-finals of UEFA Europa League
Villarreal beat Twente 3-1 in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final at the De Grolsch Veste on Thursday, 14
April, 2011.
The Yellow Submarine booked a place for the semi-finals after winning 8-2 on aggregate.
Twente made several changes to their team from a humiliating defeat in the first leg. Mark Janko started upfront in a 4-5-1 formation for the hosts.
On the other hand, Juan http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Marco-Ruben-c23740 and Giuseppe Rossi started upfront in a 4-4-2 setup.
The game witnessed a slow and cagey start and looked like both teams were playing a friendly game. The hosts had a first sight on goal in the 14th minute when Douglas Teixeira made a surging run inside the box and fed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emir-Bajrami-c12511, whose strike
from close range was nicely parried away by Diego Lopez.
Villarreal were sluggish in possession and gave away the ball cheaply. The hosts created decent opportunities to score and were rewarded with a goal just after the half-hour mark.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Theo-Janssen-c34871 played lovely one-two passing before the latter released Bajrami inside the penalty area, who tapped home from close range to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
The hosts enjoyed majority of the possession and comfortably looked the better of the two sides. The Tukkers had a wonderful opportunity to double their advantage just before the half-time whistle. Bajrami showed wonderful trickery on the left flank and
twisted the defender inside out before dragging a shot towards goal, which went centimetres past the far post.
The second half started at the same pace as the first 45 minutes did. The game entered into a dull period of play and the first action of the half resulted in a red card for the Twente right-back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dwight-Tiendalli-c11774. The Dutch defender hauled down a Villarreal
player inside the box and the referee had no hesitation in showing him a straight red card and also awarded the visitors a penalty.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Giuseppe-Rossi-c15027 stepped up to take the spot kick and comfortably tucked his shot low to the keeper’s right to make it 1-1 for the evening and 6-2 on aggregate.
The goal added spark into the visiting camp and they created a host of chances after the equaliser. They clearly outperformed the ten men Villarreal in the midfield battle.
The Spanish side took the lead in the 84th minute after they were awarded another penalty. This time Ruben Villareal stepped up and scored almost an identical goal as Rossi did.
Two became three just before the full time whistle. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sander-Boschker-c32440 but his half clearance fell into the path of Cani, who whacked a smashing
volley into the roof of the net to make 3-1 for the visitors and seal the tie.
Villarreal will take on Porto in the first leg of the semi-finals on 28 April, 2011.
