Villarreal's Borja Valero says Spain call-up is dream come true
Villarreal midfielder Borja Valero has described his call to to the Spain national team as a ‘dream’.
The 25-year-old, who has never been a part of the Spain set up at senior level before, was a late addition to the squad along with team-mate Bruno Soriano.
The call-ups came after injuries ruled out Fernando Torres, Pedro Rodriguez, Xavi Hernandez, Francesc Fabregas and Jesus Navas for the UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifiers against Lithuania
and Scotland.
As a result, Spain coach Vincente del Bosque had to recruit some other faces, with Valero, who has been in good form for Villarreal having helped them to second in La Liga, being one of them.
'This is a step up'
According to Spanish daily newspaper
AS, the former Real Madrid man said that: “The club told me. There had been rumours [on Sunday] but I found out on Monday. It is a shame that this is because of injuries to team-mates, but the truth is that I am very happy. This is a step up for me,
as it is the dream of any player to play for his country. Hopefully this is just the beginning and that many more Villarreal players come to the national side. The fact that five players are in the team gives a good idea of the good feeling going through the
team.”
Valero added that the call up had come due to Villarreal’s strong form in the league which has seen them win five of their first six games.
He said that: “We have did a great job from the beginning. Nilmar is top scorer in the league [Giuseppe] Rossi is just behind him, and are producing some good work.”
Meanwhile, Villarreal manager Juan Carlos Garrido has claimed that the club having five players in the Spain squad could only help to improve his side.
He told reporters that: “The fact that we have players used by the Spanish team is very good and increased the level of the team and the enthusiasm of the players.”
