Villas-Boas, Tottenham and the £70 million war chest

It looks like Tottenham Hotspur mean business as they look set to confirm the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as their new manager. While many view the appointment with doubtful eyes, Villas-Boas is considered by others to be the next Jose Mourinho. Or
at least he was when the Portuguese manager arrived at Stamford Bridge last season. People started talking about a revolution at Chelsea and saw Villas-Boas as the manager who may possibly take Chelsea beyond where Mourinho had taken them.
Alas, it was all a bit too premature and overly optimistic. Villas-Boas struggled at the Bridge, having seen Chelsea’s league form dip to an all time low. The revolution that he wanted to bring about never came, as Roman Abramovich succumbed to player power
and had to release the manager after only 8 months with the club. A sad end to what looked like a promising love affair between man and club.
What went wrong? Analysts and journalists alike blame Villas-Boas’s impatience and the club’s tendency to grant ‘cult’ heroes such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Frank-Lampard-c14097 influence and power over its affairs. Perhaps Villas-Boas did rush things and should’ve taken
it slow, playing to the club’s strengths and gradually making changes to decrease the average age of the squad.
He also made signings that did not work out for the London side. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 by many, and was seen as a direct replacement for
the Ivorian striker. However, he never got much of a chance at the club and faded away as Chelsea sacked Villas-Boas, appointing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Di Matteo as interim manager and going on to win the FA cup and the Champions League.
That is all in the past now. Villas-Boas still hasn’t been officially unveiled as Tottenham manager and already everyone is talking about what to expect from him. Tottenham’s current squad and game play suit the manager’s footballing philosophy. And the
latest buzz is that Tottenham will grant Villas-Boas an astounding £70 million war chest as they prepare to strengthen their squad and prepare for next season. That is quite an amount, by anyone's standards.
Villas-Boas has been reassured of financial backing by the club and is supposedly happy with the club’s future plans. Tottenham were given a major boost as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 signed a four-year contract extension last week. With Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson
already in the bag, and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 apparently on the way, Tottenham are now looking at other targets as they attempt to assemble a formidable and quality squad before the new season starts.
The team could literally get any player they want with the amount that has been granted to Villas-Boas. Currently, the club are reportedly targeting Brazilian playmaker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oscar-c28720, who currently plays for Internacionale.
Joao Moutinho, the 25-year old Portuegues midfielder is also another target for the North London club. The Porto player is extremelt versatile and can operate as a holding, central or attacking midfielder. He will indeed prove to be a valuable addition to
the squad if a move materializes.
Even if http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 decides to leave, Tottenham have nothing to fear. They could get a very handsome amount for the Croatian playmaker who is reportedly wanted by Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Tottenham could add this to the 70 million quid transfer kitty and compete financially with the likes of Manchester City and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, who have dominated the transfer market in recent years with their purchasing power.
The possibilities look endless, and Tottenham could well be a force to be reckoned with come next season.
