Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas admits that nerves are at an all time high at the club, and believes that it is affecting his team and their performances out on the pitch.
The Portuguese tactician believes that nerves are the main cause behind the shock 0-1 defeat against Wigan at White Hart Lane last weekend.
Wigan Athletic midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ben-Watson-c7458 scored the only goal of the game as the Latics cruised to a rare and surprise victory. Tottenham had however no one to blame but themselves for the slip up. The team lacked conviction going forward, and failed to impose
themselves on the visitors.
Tottenham also had a lack of fight and Brad Friedel’s bad form to thank for the defeat. Wigan had created a number of chances in the game, but were themselves not very clinical as they scored the only goal of the game.
This marks Tottenham’s second consecutive defeat at home, with the previous being an embarrassing 2-4 defeat at the hands of European Champions http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
Boos from the crowd rung around the stadium after the final whistle, and things looked grim for the team and the manager. The fans had also voiced their disapproval when the in-form Jermain Defoe was substituted for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 after Tottenham had
conceded the goal.
Villas-Boas’ decision not the play both strikers together, especially when his team were a goal down, was not received with enthusiasm by the fans. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 also looked very upset as he stormed down the tunnel right after coming off the pitch.
The result leaves the North London club in fifth place, level on points with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019, who lead by goal difference. Speaking to the press after the game, Villas-Boas had said:
“Sometimes we’re just not clear in our decision making; it can happen because of anxiety. We try to do everything right and we end up doing everything wrong. You find yourself on the back foot and this raises the anxiety because you ask yourself: ‘why don’t
you do things properly?’”
Spurs will travel to Manchester City this weekend to face the English champions as they look to recover their form and bounce back from the Wigan defeat.
