Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas admits that his team currently lack team ethic, especially after suffering a shock defeat at the hands of Wigan at home last weekend.
The manager admits that he was unhappy to see http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 storm down the tunnel after the striker was substituted in Tottenham’s surprising 0-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane.
The Spurs faithful had also turned on the home side as a wave of boos echoed around the stadium when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 came on for Defoe.
Tottenham had conceded a goal, and had looked second best all evening as Wigan put up an impressive away performance. The Tottenham fans voiced their displeasure when the in-form Defoe was substituted, and after the final whistle when the home team was unable
to turn the game around.
The players were booed off the pitch, and the manager looked a grim figure and he had a lot to ponder about. Jermain Defoe had also seemed very upset at the decision as he came off the pitch and walked straight down the tunnel. Speaking to reporters about
the incident, Villas-Boas said:
“For sure it is not something that is very pleasing to see. The most important thing for the players to realise is that we do things for the benefit of the team. We understand individual frustrations but we, as a team, are more important.”
“The game wasn’t going well for Defoe in our thought process. Maybe he thinks the opposite but we don’t take him off to punish him. We took him off to improve the team.”
Adebayor had been expected to be Tottenham’s first choice striker ever since his permanent move from Manchester City and Jermain Defoe’s summer contract saga. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international was linked with a move away from White Hart Lane following speculation
regarding his status in the team under Andre Villas-Boas.
However, Adebayor has not made a single start this season, and Defoe has been in impressive form and is currently Spurs’ top scorer. Following last week’s incident, Adebayor is expected to start this weekend’s game against his former club and reigning English
champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
