Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is delighted with the team’s Europa League draw against Lyon for the last 32 of the competition, and has labelled it as ‘excellent’ for both the club and the tournament.
The Portuguese manager has publicly stressed his desire to win the Europa League with Tottenham this season, and believes that his team have the quality and character to go on to the finals and bring the trophy home to White Hart Lane.
The manager won the Europa League two seasons ago with Porto when he led them to the Portuguese quadruple. Villas-Boas had admitted his surprise at how the competition is treated in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749, and said that it is still a prestigious tournament and should
get more respect and priority.
Villas-Boas has already shown his desire to do well in the tournament by fielding out a strong team. The Portuguese has promised silverware to the Tottenham fans this season, and is targeting the Europa League trophy.
The draws for the final 32 of the tournament were held last night, and Tottenham drew Lyon for the next round of the competition. Villas-Boas believes it is an excellent draw for both teams and the Europa League. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“Lyon is a tremendous tie for us in the sense that it gives this country the chance to see wonderful Europa League fixtures being played. Zenit-Liverpool and Tottenham-Lyon should both be considered like Champions League fixtures so I think this is something
important for the competition, for how it’s seen in this country.”
“The fact that we play Lyon, who are used to being in the Champions League and used to winning trophies, is an important reference to us. I think it’s excellent for the publicity of the competition in this country.”
In other news, the Portuguese tactician ruled out a January sale of star player and winger http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid. The manager said that it would be impossible for the player to leave White Hart Lane as he looks
to strengthen the team, not weaken it by letting star players leave.
