Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas thinks that Chelsea do not deserve to be in the Europa League after they crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 are the first ever defending champions to have gone out of the competition in the group stages. Despite managing a very impressive and positive 6-1 victory over Nordsjaelland, the European Champions crashed out of the competition after finishing
third in their group.
This puts Chelsea in the Europa League as all the teams who finish third in their Champions League group automatically book a place in the final 32 of the tournament.
Villas-Boas managed Chelsea last season, and was dismissed after he failed to make an impact only 6 months into his appointment. The manager learnt how things are done at Stamford Bridge the hard way, and become one of the many coaches who have endured the
wrath of owner Roman Abramovich.
Chelsea recently sacked http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Di Matteo before they crashed out of the Champions League and appointed Rafael Benitez as interim manager. This is the same Di Matteo who led the club to its first ever Champions League trophy last season.
Villas-Boas’ side qualified for the next stages of the competition last night after a 3-1 win over Greek side Panathinaikos at White Hart Lane. Villas-Boas believes that Chelsea do not deserve to be in the tournament, but is hoping that his team draw his
former club in the final 32 of the tournament.
Speaking to reporters, the Portuguese tactician said:
“In the situation as it stands, teams fail in the Champions League and are promoted to the Europa League, which is a massive bonus. You can’t give a bonus to teams that have failed. I think it’s extremely unfair. This is not something which I’ve just invented
yesterday; it’s something I said in the UEFA meetings when I was at Porto.”
“If we cross, it is going to be two magnificent games, for sure. Sometimes it’s destiny.”
Tottenham next take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019 in the Premier League at Goodison Park on the weekend. The club recently managed a hat trick of victories in the league, which puts them at 4th spot. A win against the Toffees will be very significant to their top
4 prospects indeed.
