Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas refused to blame goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Lloris-c16408 after the player’s error led to Spurs’ exit from the Capital One Cup last night against Norwich City.
Tottenham travelled to Carrow Road to face the inconsistent and toothless Norwich City for the Capital One Cup clash. Going into the game, Spurs were favourites to grab a victory and kick Norwich out of the competition.
However, Norwich grabbed an unlikely win in the dying minutes of the game, and it was Tottenham who crashed out of the competition.
The first half was a dull affair, where both teams failed to produce any goals. It was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 who broke the deadlock, scoring a 20-yard venomous shot in the second half which gave the visitors a deserved lead.
Norwich soon answered back with two quick goals in the dying minutes of the game which completely shell shocked Tottenham.
Second half substitute http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Tettey scored the equalizer after his shot deflected off Jan Vertonghen’s outstretched leg.
Norwich quickly took the lead after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris failed to deal with a Grant Holt header, which was put into the net by Simeon Jackson.
Tottenham had their chance to equalize when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mark-Bunn-c24110 denied the American as he made a fine save from the spot.
The game ended 2-1 and Norwich were through to the quarter finals of the competition. Villas-Boas was clearly disappointed by the defeat, especially after seeing his side dominate and control the game for the majority of the 90 minutes.
The manager however refused to blame Lloris for the second goal, but rued Tottenham’s defensive mistakes. Speaking to the press, he said:
"You cannot match the emotion and concentration players face during the game. We obviously have to do better and try to improve things for the next game.”
"It's a pity to see the game slip from our hands. We had a good performance."
When asked about Lloris, the Portuguese replied:
"He did extremely well in the game. He had a good solid performance. It is difficult for goalkeepers in situations like these."
