Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down talk linking Spurs with a January move for Shakhtar Donetsk star midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Willian-c36898.
The Tottenham boss insists that he has not even thought about making a move for the Brazilian playmaker, and has rubbished rumours that claimed Spurs had made an approach for his services in the summers.
The manager did however attempt to sign Willian while he was in charge of European champions and league leaders http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 last season. Further fuel had been added to the story when Willian claimed that he was in regular contact with the Portuguese manager and they exchanged text messages on a daily basis.
Shakhtar recently marked an impressive win in the Champions League when they hosted Chelsea, and won in a 2-1 score line, where Willian was one of the many players who stood out.
The Brazilian had spoken to the press and revealed that Tottenham and Chelsea had made an approach for him in the summer, and also said that he will have trouble choosing between both clubs as he is a fan of both.
Many expected the player to opt for Tottenham owing to his ‘relationship’ with Villas-Boas, and a January transfer was imminent.
However, Villas-Boas has said that he is currently focused on his injured players rather than new recruits. Speaking to the press, Villas-Boas said:
“He is an extremely good player but we have to respect what we are doing and the talent we have in our squad. I have not thought about January yet. The scouts all over the world are gathering information but we have not dedicated ourselves to a study of January.”
Tottenham are without star players Scott Parker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Younes-Kaboul-c37543 and Moussa Dembele, and Villas-Boas is currently more focused on helping these players get back to first team action. The manager believes their return will boost Spurs’ chances of a top 4 finish and help them get more results.
He added: "We have so many of our first-team players coming back towards the end of December and January and those will be like the addition to our squad."
