Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas was delighted after last night’s 3-1 victory over West Ham, and wants to focus on the victory rather than the anti-Semitic chants that came from the visiting supporters.
The club has been through a trying month as it suffered 3 consecutive defeats in the Premier League, and then had to see out a stalemate against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926. A Spurs fan had been stabbed before the Lazio game, and it overshadowed
the match that followed.
Now, the club has once again come underneath the spotlight as it was the target of anti-Semitic chants from the West Ham supporters last night. The travelling supporters had aimed a flurry of offensive chants at the Spurs fans, who are largely Jewish people.
Managers Andre Villas-Boas and Sam Allardyce had refused to comment on the situation, and insisted that they had not heard any such chants. However, such behaviour in football is growing and has become a cause of worry for officiating bodies.
Speaking to reporters, Villas-Boas said that he was more concerned with his team’s performance and the victory, which was badly needed to help them maintain their momentum for a top 4 finish. He said:
“I prefer not to mar the performance with a situation like this. You know the animosity there is between Tottenham and West Ham and as long as it doesn’t reach stupidity it is a great, great rivalry.”
“It would be extremely unfair for me to mar the performance of the players but we can’t decipher the true meaning of what they were saying.”
The match ended in a 3-1 score line, wrapping up much-needed 3 points for Tottenham. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359 had given Tottenham the lead at the stroke of half-time, and added their third near the dying minutes of the game after Gareth Bale’s had extended the lead
in the second half.
Villas-Boas was delighted by the striker’s goal, and was happy with his team’s recovery. He added:
“I think it was a very good performance. We have been chasing a good, solid 90-minute performance for a while and we got it today very deservingly.”
