Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas was delighted by a historic win at Old Trafford, but was quick to talk down a Spurs title challenge.
Tottenham earned their first win against Manchester United at Old Trafford in an enthralling 2-3 encounter. This was the club’s first win at Old Trafford in nearly 23 years; the club last won at United’s turf back in 1989 through a Gary Lineker strike.
This was a historic night for Tottenham, and an important win for Andre Villas-Boas, who passed a truly stern challenge this past weekend against the former English and European champions.
The Portuguese manager had promised silverware when he was appointed as Spurs boss this summer, but believes the Premier League title is not a realistic target for the club just yet.
The manager is more interested in finishing in the top four and thus guaranteeing a Champions League spot for the club. However, the win against United has many pondering whether Spurs can truly mount a title challenge this season.
Speaking to the press after the game, Villas-Boas said:
"A couple of days ago, we were exactly the opposite. This is a very special night for us but our quest is to qualify for the Champions League.”
"It is very difficult to go for the title. We understand it is a place where the great teams of this country belong. We want to win a trophy this season - and we want Champions League qualification."
Villas-Boas was full of praise for his players, who put in a determined performance and survived an intense last couple of minutes. United, having gone a goal down, kept on pushing for the equalizer, but Tottenham defended well and held on to grab all three
points.
This is the club’s third successive win in the league, and left Villas-Boas delighted and relieved.
"We were tremendous today, the players put in the effort and intensity to get a result," he added. "You can see from the desire to hold on to such a historic result that we can count on each other to do big things."
Tottenham are currently 5th in the league, and have 11 points from a possible 18. They will host Aston Villa at home this coming weekend.
