Question:

Vilseck, Germany...for youth?

I'm an army brat and am most likely moving to Vilseck Germany over Spring Break of at the end of the school year. I lived in Kaiserslautern through 6th and 7th grade. Can anyone tell me what it's like there, the DODD (or whatever) schools? And what there will be to do for an almost 16 year old?

  1. I suggest you search Y!A for "vilseck", you'll find lots of answers there.

From what I know the village itself is a small hamlet, not much fun there. Don't know what it is going to be like on-base.

  2. Brats are a bit out of touch there

  3. There's plenty of military folks coming and going through Vilseck all the time, partly because of Vilseck Kaserne's proximity to Grafenwohr Training Area just to the north, Hohenfels Training Area not far to the south, and because a lot of training is done at Vilseck itself.  I've visited Vilseck a few times and it looked like a decent little base, with nicer amenities and newer buildings than many bases I've seen in Germany.  They were building and expanding a lot at Grafenwohr base proper when I was last there (2006), so there's probably more to see and do up there than even at Vilseck.  As far as nearby German towns, the village of Vilseck doesn't have much.  Amberg, which lies between GTA and HTA (Grafenwohr Training Area and Hohenfels Training Area) is the biggest regional town... Nurnberg is the biggest regional city, and Regensburg after that.  You're relatively close to the Czech border, so I'd highly recommend that you and your family visit Prague and other places in the Czech Republic.  There's plenty to do, if you know what to look for, at almost any Army base.  One thing is for sure (and you probably know this already)--don't count on the Army to provide all of your entertainment for you.
